A river in Israel has been turned red with actual blood in what one witness described as looking like a plague described in the Bible.
Eerie footage taken by Kann News shows the water in the Nahal Alexander river flowing in a murky red colour.
Another clip shows a section of the river bright red as if out of some apocalyptic movie.
Local photographer Amberto said: “It looks like the plague of blood in Egypt.”
In the Bible, the first plague of Egypt in the book of Exodus involved the River Nile having its water turned into blood.
The creepy sight has been caused by slaughterhouses in the regions of Tulkarem and Schechem dumping blood and other waste into the Schechem Stream.
Heavy rains in the region have overwhelmed the purification plant meaning the dirty water has not been cleaned like it usually would do before reaching the Alexander River.
There was also a huge demand for chicken meant last month for the region to supply to Israelis marking Passover and to Muslims before the month-long Ramadan festival.
Kann news report the blood river has worried locals, with the excess body parts of the animals polluting one of Israel’s few freshwater streams.
The army’s Civilian Authority is primarily responsible for environmental safety in the region.
But Alon Hyman, Hefer Valley councilman, said: “Due to the corona-related restrictions, their enforcement capabilities have been slashed.”
It is not the first time rivers across the world have been seen turning blood-red.
Last month, a Russian river was seen turning a mysterious red colour, baffling officials.
A spokesman for the regional ecological ministry said a local company had made a large and sudden ”emission of an unknown red-coloured substance”.
“Waste waters got into river through drainage pipes,” he said.
“The head of the company was summoned to the ministry of ecology to assess circumstances of the violation.”
A creek in Canada was also seen coloured a spooky blood-red in April in a scene straight out of a horror film.
In 2018, a Russian river turned red right before a rare super blood moon eclipse.
And in the same year, a lake mysteriously turned blood-red.
